Operating principle of the variable optical attenuator mVOA
The variable optical attenuator mVOA uses an electrostatic MEMS mirror. By applying a voltage (typically 0-5V or 0-6.5V) to a control pin, the electrostatic force moves this tiny mirror. As the mirror changes position, it alters the optical path, thereby increasing or decreasing the attenuation (light blockage). When power is removed, the variable optical attenuator VOA returns to a default state, which can be either "bright" (minimum attenuation) or "dark" (high attenuation), depending on the variant.
